As a village girl, Mamata saw people around her struggle to get back what they have invested in agriculture. As the Master LEADer from M.E.S College of Commerce, Sirsi, Mamta thinks that this has made the new generation quit agriculture. The team comprising of Mamata Joshi, Veena Hegde, Shilpa Hegde and Vinay Hegde started a project to encourage agriculture. They conducted a survey in Chipgi to gauge the level of awareness regarding subsidy schemes available for farmers. “After scanning through the results, I decided to conduct the ‘subsidy camp,’ where we arranged a one-day interaction program with the horticulture department officials. This was done with an aim to provide information regarding all subsidies that an agriculturist ought to know and ensure that they availed it. This was our little effort to solve the problems of the agriculturist,” says Mamata.
Mamata’s team believes that making the villagers aware of all the schemes would create transparent processes of subsidy disbursement. The team approached the officials of the Department of Horticulture to inform the villagers about the schemes. Dr. Ramachandra Madival, Director of Horticulture Department, Sirsi, was kind enough to accept the invitation. The team organized a camp and distributed applications to the farmers to avoid further confusion and delay. They made it a point to track the process until the eligible farmers were granted subsidies. Of the 80 farmers who attended the camp, 30 people completed the applications and 10 of them have been granted subsidies so far.
